4 Pro Tips for Unclogging Stubborn Blocked Drains

Blocked drains are a common yet frustrating household issue that can disrupt your daily life and just make things harder to do. Whether it’s a clogged kitchen sink or toilet in revolt, knowing how to deal with these problems effectively is crucial to minimise disruption and keep your drains healthy.

At Pearla Plumbing, we’ve seen it all and are here to share some pro tips and insights to help you manage and prevent stubborn blockages.

Tip #1: Use the Trusty Plunger

A plunger is a versatile tool that can handle various blockages. It’s not just for toilets; you can use a cup plunger for sinks and showers too. When plunging, make sure to cover the drain completely and use quick, vigorous motions to create the suction needed to dislodge the clog. This method works best for minor blockages caused by soft materials like hair and soap.

Tip #2: Fizz and Dislodge with Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar has long been the go-to home remedy for unclogging and cleaning drains. Not to mention, it’s a far safer solution than harsh chemicals that often cause costly damage. All you’ll need to do is pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain and chase it with a good amount of white vinegar. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes before flushing the drain with boiling water. This method is particularly effective for breaking down grease and organic matter.

Tip #3: When to Use a Drain Snake

A drain snake is ideal for tougher clogs that don’t respond to plunging or chemical reactions. Simply insert the snake into the drain and twist it to catch the blockage. Pull the snake out carefully to avoid making a mess. This tool is excellent for removing debris like hair, small objects or buildup deep within the pipes.

Tip #4: Check the P-Trap Every Once in a While

The P-trap under your sink can accumulate debris over time and eventually clog. To clean it, place a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap and remove any trapped debris. This simple maintenance task can prevent many common blockages and keep your sink draining smoothly and possibly smelling better too.
