Overview: Blocked Laundry Drain Investigation – Dee Why
Our team attended a residential property in Dee Why to investigate a persistent blocked drain issue affecting the laundry. The homeowner reported that the laundry sink frequently overflowed during washing machine use — a recurring issue over the past several weeks.
The property owner also mentioned ongoing sewer plumbing issues dating back to their initial purchase of the home.
On-Site Inspection & CCTV Drain Camera Investigation
Upon arrival, our licensed Northern Beaches plumber located an inspection opening on the left-hand side of the property and another access point at the back left-hand corner. These gave us direct entry into the main sewer line for a detailed plumbing camera inspection.
Using a combination of a CCTV drain camera and a high-pressure water jet, we identified significant root intrusion throughout the main sewer line, particularly near the bathroom junction. This level of root ingress is a common cause of repeated blockages.
Further investigation revealed cracked and dislodged terracotta pipework, particularly under the concrete footpath that wraps around the home. These defects were contributing to ongoing blockages and required a permanent solution.

Recommended Solution: Full Sewer Pipe Relining
After consulting with the client, we advised that the most effective long-term solution would be sewer pipe relining. This method is ideal for repairing damaged underground pipes without the need for full excavation.
What is Pipe Relining?
Pipe relining involves inserting a resin-soaked liner into the existing pipe. Once cured, this forms a new, durable pipe within the old one, sealing off cracks and preventing further root intrusion.

Scope of Work Completed
- Performed a full drain camera inspection to assess damage
- Cleared root intrusion with high-pressure water jetting
- Relined the entire main sewer line from the stack on the left-hand side of the house to the new PVC section before the boundary trap
- Relined approximately 4 metres of the bathroom junction branch line
- Excavated 2 small areas to allow access for relining
- Removed and replaced the old gully, installing a new PVC section
- Installed 2 new inspection points for future drain cleaning and maintenance
- Reinstated and re-concreted the affected areas to their original condition
Client Outcome
The homeowner was presented with a detailed quote outlining three flexible options to suit their budget and long-term plumbing needs. The chosen solution offered a non-invasive, lasting fix for their blocked drain issues and restored full function to their sewer system.
The work was completed with minimal disruption, and the property was left clean and fully restored, with peace of mind that further blockages will be avoided.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequent blockages in laundry drains are often caused by a buildup of soap scum, lint, hair, and sometimes tree roots invading the pipes. In this Dee Why property, our inspection revealed that root intrusion and damaged terracotta pipes were the main culprits behind repeated overflow and drainage issues.
Yes. Pipe relining is a non-invasive, cost-effective solution that avoids the need for extensive excavation. It involves creating a new pipe inside the existing one, sealing cracks and preventing further root intrusion. It’s ideal for homes with concrete, landscaping, or paving that would otherwise be disturbed by digging.
When done professionally, sewer pipe relining can last over 50 years. The materials used are durable, corrosion-resistant, and designed to handle long-term water flow and pressure. It’s a reliable investment for homeowners facing recurring drainage problems.
